Sharpening your Tools

It wasn’t too long ago that I remember entering my final year of college, realizing that in a few short months I would be entering the “real world” – a world I was completely unfamiliar with. For 18 years I had experienced the expected, and it was hard to imagine a lifestyle that didn’t involve going to class every day. The realities of entering the workforce can at times seem oppressive and it’s easy to begin to doubt your preparedness. Here on some tips on what it might look like to sharpen your “tools” in order to get your first job:

1. Take a PUBLIC SPEAKING class. I cannot emphasize enough how important it is to develop your ability to communicate your ideas effectively and eloquently. When I attend career fairs looking for our next interns, I typically know within a minute of speaking with a student whether or not I will recommend them for an interview. Communication is key when you’re positioning yourself to be considered for a job. Whether it’s at your university or at a local organization such as Toastmasters, take a class and work diligently on your ability to speak well in front of others.

2. Join a NETWORKING ORGANIZATION. There are plenty of opportunities while you’re in college to broaden your professional network if you capitalize upon organizations such as AIAS, NOMA, AIA, ULI, and more. Take it a step further and apply for a leadership position within the organization – while I was at Ohio State serving as the President of the Ohio State Chapter of AIAS, I developed relationships with local architecture firms that ultimately allowed me to secure a full-time position prior to graduation.

3. SHADOW a local professional. Never hesitate to reach out to local architecture firms and inquire about shadowing opportunities. This is a great way to gain insight and exposure to a firm’s culture and begin to determine if it’s a place you could see yourself working. Firm visits are often times provided by AIAS chapters so inquire with your local chapter to see how you can benefit from those opportunities.

4. Develop and understand your PERSONAL BRAND. Before you attend a career fair, submit a resume, or interview for a job, figure out what makes YOU unique and identify your (3) selling points. In order to be confident in your abilities and skills, you have to first identify them. Leverage your past experiences with your strengths to define your brand and make sure that it is consistent across all platforms (resume, portfolio, social media, etc.)

5. Do your RESEARCH. Understand WHY you are applying for certain jobs – ask yourself the following questions: Do the company’s values align with my values? Can I see myself working well within the firm’s culture? Am I passionate about the type of work the firm does? If you can’t see yourself working for a particular company, then don’t waste your time applying. You might also have to conduct some internal research as well. Identify what you are passionate about AND what you’re skilled at – make sure you are applying for a position that blends both your talents and passions.

Above all else, believe in yourself. Continually work towards becoming the best version of yourself and enjoy the journey.
